Shortened URL, spammer's new target
Bangalore: Short URLs have recently become the latest target of spammers to hide malicious content. Malware writers and spammers are taking advantage of the fact that many websites are now offering shortened URL to make it more convenient for users. The basic problem is that not all spam and virus protection suite in market can drill down to original URL and this is encouraging spammers to target shortened URLs like Twitter. Twitter allows users to 'tweet' a long URL without exceeding their 140 character limit. Nowadays people are more likely to click on a shortened URL than a long link. This new kind of attack has exposed security vulnerabilities as users are exposed to malwares which their Antivirus/Malware protection cannot block. Companies like Symantec, ESET, McAffee, will have to upgrade their software to match with this new threat.
